Wild Simulated American Ginseng Growers

Denny Colwell,  owner of Colwell’s Ginseng, grows Forest Grown Wild Simulated American Ginseng in the heart of Western Pennsylvania Appalachian Mountains. 

I am the 3^rd generation of American ginseng growers & my son is an active ginseng grower, learning what it takes to continue the tradition.  My granddad started growing ginseng many many years ago, giving us a family tradition of growing Wild Simulated American Ginseng for over 80+ years.

Ginseng Growing Tradition

I can remember my mother & I planting some ginseng seed in the woods behind our house when I was 5-7 years old.  Just a pup! I used to help my grandad pick the berries when they were ripe so we could get the seed. As I grew older, I was permitted to help dig the precious root from his patch as he called it.

When we were done planting his patches, we would take the extra seed deep into our area of wooded country side where we never traveled before. We then would plant the extra seed to keep it growing in the wild, a tradition I have & still do on occasion with my son.  Thru the years of helping my granddad, he taught me alot . While I still use some of his ways, each generation learns different ways of doing things but never forgets where it all started.  Grandpa, my brothers, and I dug his last patch for him when he was 86 yrs of age. Now I only hope I can continue to grow ginseng as long as he did. Maybe my sons & grandson will help me dig my last patch in the years to come. It will then be their turn to continue the tradition.

Using the knowledge & experience we have all gathered thru the years, I am glad for what he started. That knowledge has been passed down from generation to generation, and that tradition continues.

As my son recently reminded me, growing ginseng is something you have to do cause its in your blood. Neither one of us can imagine a time when we won’t be in the woods working and learning what we can to continue the tradition that was given to us.  The Pennsylvania Appalachian soil, enables our family to grow some of the finest Wild Simulated American Ginseng in the Appalachia Mountain Region.
